A FRESHER? ASPECTS OF UNIVERSITY STUDY THAT TAKES MOST FRESHERS BY SURPRISE
The transition to a higher level of education is always a tough stage for most FRESHERS. The idea of leaving home, the comfort zone of your present environment where everything you need is at your beck and call, and plunging into a new world, new air, or new environment could be freaky.
The university being a world of its own, with customs and values you encounter nowhere else, coupled with the unlimited freedom to do, think and speak as you please, is by far different from the previous school settings you might have been exposed to.
Faced for the first time with this openness, it's natural to feel perplexed.
So, as a newbie to the system, you tend to wonder at the way things are done in your new world. The several styles that seem contradictory to that of your previous world confuse you.
The somewhat big intentions and dreams fade away because you do not know how to deliver. Nobody has ever told you what university/college would be like, so you've given a little thought to how you would cope.
Worry not! We've packaged, just for you, some aspects of university/college study that take most FRESHERS by surprise so you can prepare ahead.
Read on!
1) INDEPENDENT STUDY:
Most FRESHERS expect to learn with a familiar group of students, a class teacher pastoring them along together, as experienced in their previous world.
Though they attend several lectures, they're surprised to have little or no personal contact with members of staff and little guidance.
These sets of fresh legs have no idea that they would be spending most of their time studying on their own.
2) IS IT MY RESPONSIBILITY TO SEEK HELP?
Sadly enough, most FRESHERS fail to seek for support when they finally discover that they're not coping.
They rather keep the feelings of inadequacy to themselves than set out for the counselling service. Not knowing that in this new world, it's their sole responsibility to seek for assistance when needed and not the other way round.
3) WIDE-SCOPE OF COURSES:
FRESHERS are always taken aback by the breadth of their courses, compared to what they've been exposed to in their previous school setting.
So, they expect to
be told what and where to study. They assume that the teachers would help pull the courses together as time goes by. But, rather, they just move on to new topics and some topics are not even touched in class.

These surprises highlighted above overwhelm most FRESHERS thereby erasing their hopes of a bright beginning.
